Marilyn Frye describes “oppression”. She says: “The experience for oppressed people is the feeling of being trapped in their own lives by barriers and forces that are not only accidental, but also systematically linked together in order to entrap and penalize one’s movement in every direction. The experience is that of being caged-in: all routes, in all directions, are blocked. PP12). By selecting themes, characters and characterizations. The characters in “The answer is no” and “Eveline”, had to choose between freedom or oppression.
Every story has a main theme. The main idea of any literary work is its theme. A story’s theme can also be defined as what it tells its audience. The themes in James Joyce’s Eveline and Naguib’s The Answer is No are the same. Females have to choose between being free or oppressed. Characters can be a character in a novel or film. Characters can be divided into two types: major characters and minor characters. The two characters in “Eveline” and “The Answer is No”, are both major.
Characterization refers to how characters in a novel, play, movie, or other story are presented. Direct characterization is one of the main types. The other type is indirect characterization. The author can use direct characterization to tell the audience the character’s traits. Indirect characterisation is the opposite. It shows traits that reveal the character. The two short story “The Answer is No”, as well as “Eveline”, have direct characterization. The protagonist is Miss, a wealthy Egyptian woman of her twenties. She does live in Egypt and is a teacher at a local school. In contrast to this, in the story ‘Eveline,’ the protagonist Eveline is an Irish woman in her late teens.
The setting is a crucial part of almost all literary works. In a literary piece, setting is the place and time in which an event occurs. In addition, the setting may also be a social position, climate or historical period. A setting may be imaginary or real. A general and specific setting can be distinguished. Setting can also help to show character traits. The setting can have a strong impact on a story. The settings of “The Answer is No”, “Eveline”, and “The Answer is No II” were in Egypt in the first story and in Dublin, Ireland in the second.
Conflict is a literary device that increases tension in a story, and makes the reader interested. It also develops characters. In literature, conflict is the main problem. The first type of conflict is External Conflict, which is the struggle between opposing forces. The second type is Internal Conflict which is the struggle within the character. The internal conflict is also present in “Eveline” and both “The Answer is No”. The characters in these stories have to face it alone.
According to Naguib Makfouz’s “The Answer is No”, she had asked in terror what had taken place, and the man had replied, “Do NOT be afraid or depressed.” Keep it quiet and I’ll propose to your when you become an adult. Miss was fourteen when the tutor of her school who is also her headmaster raped. She suffered a difficult, painful period of struggle with her inner conflict. He was true to his word. He proposed, but she declined because she didn’t love him or have any respect for him. Author Naguib Makfouz describes the horrific event of a child innocent who suffered a horrific crime. The story represented a horrific nightmare and shocking reality. The little girl was horribly abused by her tutor. Miss who was abused sexually and it has destroyed her. She thinks she has no other option and must suffer in silence and isolation. She was forced to choose whether to accept or reject the proposal of the headmaster and spend her remaining life without marriage and children. Miss had been oppressed all her life.
James Joyce has written a short tale called “Eveline”. The story is about Eveline who is a poor Irish girl of nineteen. In addition to that, she lives with her family in Dublin (Ireland) including her parents, sisters and brothers. She was also in-charge of house work such as cooking and cleaning. She also works in a store. According to “Eveline”, even though she is over nineteen she still feels threatened by her father. (Joyce). She was tired of living and daydreamed about a life that didn’t include her abusive, alcohol-dependent father. Her drunken dad would spend her money buying himself alcohol drinks. She planned on fleeing to Argentina to be with Frank. Then, to top it all off, she starts a whole new life together with Frank. She could either leave Argentina with her secret boyfriend and start a whole new life there or be oppressed at home by her father. Though she was faced with a difficult decision, she made a promise to her mom to take care of their house. Her mother, however, was already dead. She also thinks doing housework isn’t that bad and that her father doesn’t always abuse her. James Joyce is the author of “Eveline”. “She sat with her white face, passive and helpless, like an animal,” the author said. Further, Eveline is oppressed and unable to make decisions by her abusive dad.
Conclusion: Through the analysis of themes, characters and characterizations in “The Answer is No”, and “Eveline”, the authors had to decide between freedom and oppression in their daily lives. The two protagonists of these short stories, “The Answer is No” and “Eveline”, were unable to choose between their freedoms or being oppressed.
