In the recent North Carolina gubernatorial election, Democrat Roy Cooper successfully secured his second term by defeating Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Forest. According to Politico, with 91 percent of the expected vote reported, the incumbent governor emerged victorious with a 5 percent margin.
Initially, this race was anticipated to be a high-profile contest, considering North Carolina is among the few swing states that hold gubernatorial elections during presidential cycles. However, Cooper’s proactive and well-regarded response to the COVID-19 crisis led to a rise in his approval ratings during the summer. Furthermore, late-breaking polls suggested that he held a significant lead.
Winning the reelection provides an opportunity for Governor Cooper to renew his efforts in promoting his education priorities. Many of these priorities, such as increased teacher salaries and expanded access to early college and childcare programs, faced obstacles due to Republican opposition in the General Assembly. Additionally, Cooper’s administration launched NC Job Ready, an initiative aimed at strengthening workforce capacity and preparing K-12 students for future employment.
Democrats had hoped to gain control of either the state House or Senate, or potentially both, but as Election Night extended into Wednesday, the likelihood of this outcome seemed uncertain. Even if the Democratic minorities in the legislature expand, it may provide Governor Cooper with the opportunity to negotiate for additional funding to support school budgets, which have been severely impacted by the financial constraints imposed by COVID-19.
